The Origins of Country Garden Design

The History behind Country Garden Design

Much of my gardening knowledge stems from my mother’s knee – of all places! – from where I obtained my plant knowledge. After a few years flying round the world for BOAC (that dates me) and then working as a secretary in London, I spent several years on a tiny island in the Seychelles where I reclaimed a mangrove swamp in order to provide sufficient productive ground to grow vegetables for the islanders and increasing tourist trade. We even got to the stage of exporting to other islands.

More recently I spent two years with the National Trust at Chedworth Roman Villa restoring and replanting the gardens with ancient plants that would have been used in Roman times. Should you go and visit the villa, it is hugely interesting and well worth a visit but my work has largely been lost under recent excavations and a change in curators.

My formal landscape training was at the Royal Horticultural Society in Pershore, following which I formed my own Design and Landscape company, Country Garden Design, in 1989.

What other people say...

“You have transformed our lives with this ingenious garden. Thank you” PE

“Your design and the execution of it have exceeded our wildest dreams” VS

“We are absolutely thrilled with our new garden and have spent all summer outside” LRW

“I couldn’t have done it without you – you are an inspiration Diana” RE

“A very talented plantswoman” ESB

“The garden is wonderful and thanks to you we have also recovered from that viburnum bug. Open to the public next year!” PC

Country Garden Design offer 'Design Only' projects for your garden

An example of a ‘design only’ project)

Currently I maintain two large greenhouses in winter and spring and have a small nursery of rare and unusual plants, which, along with stock from wholesale and specialist nurseries, gives me a broad base of plants with which to provide my clients with individual and unusual gardens.

We undertake all aspects of garden design and landscape, and take pride and pleasure in our work, equally at home designing a traditional cottage garden or a contemporary space, dry garden or bog gardens. No job is too small or too large, but if we cannot complete all aspects of the landscaping ourselves, we sub-contract to another appropriate and skilled professional; the whole project is supervised by myself.

Occasionally I undertake to do the design of a garden only and leave the clients to do the hard work - at their request of course.
